SQL editors, such as PHPMyAdmin, are user hostile and require an in depth knowlege of the underlying database and a knowlege of SQL. Tables must be kept in sync by hand and the information is not grouped into any meaningful assembly. They are not application specific, nor geared up for the common tasks required to administer an e-commerce site.
Framework solutions, such as PHPNuke and OSCommerce, require the entire system, front and back, to be designed within a limited scope. The more flexible they are, the more technical they are to use and thus more expensive to develop.
Custom solutions are application specific but are expensive to develop and, therefore, tend to be inflexible and stop just short of adequate. Rarely is it cost effective to optimize them for the real world.
